What is Sky WiFi Max and is it worth the extra cost?

Sky WiFi Max Hub and Pods

Sky WiFi Max (previously known as Sky Broadband Boost), not to be confused with Virgin Media's WiFi Max or BT's Complete Wi-Fi, is Sky's peace-of-mind broadband coverage add-on. You pay an extra monthly fee for a set of features designed to banish wireless black spots at your home.

When it comes to paying extra each month, you have to establish whether it's for something you actually need. To do that, you'll want to know the details of what's on offer and exactly how those benefits come into play – that's why we've written this guide.

What is Sky WiFi Max?

Sky WiFi Max is an optional bolt-on service you can add to any Sky Broadband package, from their entry-level Superfast up to their flagship Ultrafast packages. At its core, it offers a contractual guarantee that you'll receive a stable, minimum Wi-Fi speed in every room of your home.

Once active, Sky will ship you an upgraded router (the Sky Max Hub), run automated diagnostics via the My Sky app to map out dead zones, and if necessary send you up to three Sky WiFi Pods (mesh router extenders) to reach parts your router alone cannot.

Furthermore, if the system fails to deliver the promised speed to every room after technical troubleshooting, Sky will credit you a full month's worth of broadband subscription fees back.

Note on 2026 Pricing: Following Sky's flat £3.00 per month price rise across its broadband plans, WiFi Max is unchanged at £4.00 per month, so it's one of the cheapest coverage guarantees on the market.

Pros

  • Upgraded router (WiFi 6 or WiFi 7)
  • Minimum speed guarantee in every room
  • Free evening/weekend engineer visits
  • At £4.00 per month, it's very good value

Cons

  • Speed guarantee has room/dwelling limits
  • Incompatible with Sky Q mesh links
  • Equipment must be returned if cancelled

Here's an at-a-glance look at everything offered by Sky WiFi Max:

  • Upgraded Next-Gen Routers: Standard fibre customers receive the WiFi 6 Sky Max Hub. But if you're in a CityFibre area and on either the Full Fibre 2.5 or 5 Gigafast+ plans, you get the cutting-edge WiFi 7 Gigafast+ Hub as standard.
  • Enhanced Wall-to-Wall Guarantee: You'll see a minimum speed of 10Mbps on Superfast plans, or a much sharper 25Mbps if you're on Full Fibre 150 or higher.
  • Advanced Cloud Security: Managed directly inside the My Sky app, providing real-time network monitoring and automated protection against malware, tracking, and phishing.
  • Flexible Engineering: WiFi Max completely waives the premium charges Sky usually levies for evening or weekend home appointments.
  • Sky Mobile Outage Insurance: If your home broadband suffers an unplanned outage lasting longer than 30 minutes, 2GB of data is automatically credited to your Sky Mobile Piggybank.

How to get Sky WiFi Max

Sky WiFi Max will cost you an additional £4.00 per month as a standard bolt-on, or comes completely free of charge if you subscribe to their top-tier (but still rarely available) Full Fibre 2.5 or 5 Gigafast+ broadband packages.

The Sky Q Compatibility "Catch"

If you rely on Sky Q Mini boxes, be aware that the Sky Max Hub uses a more modern mesh deployment that is technically incompatible with older satellite Q-mesh systems.

Once installed, your Sky Q TV boxes can no longer act as mini Wi-Fi hotspots to extend your data signal. While they will still work together, your Sky Q Mini boxes will need to connect directly to the main hub or via Ethernet. If you have coverage issues with your TV boxes after upgrading, Sky will issue legacy boosters to patch the gap.

How Sky WiFi Max compares to Virgin Media and BT/EE

Sky remains highly competitive here as they are currently the only major provider that actively upgrades your primary router hardware rather than just handing you plug-in plug extenders.

The Sky Max WiFi guarantee (the small print)

Whole home might not mean your whole home

Sky's Enhanced Wall-to-Wall Guarantee officially caps out at a maximum of 5 bedrooms or 12 total rooms per household. Crucially, this guarantee does not extend to external property fixtures, such as detached garages, sheds, or outdoor garden offices.

Full speed isn't guaranteed

WiFi Max does not promise your headline broadband line speed over wireless. Instead, it ensures a functional baseline of 10Mbps for standard fibre and 25Mbps for the Full Fibre plans.

However, if after an engineer's visit Sky cannot achieve even this target in various rooms, you're entitled to a one-off bill credit matching your monthly broadband cost. So in that regard, it's more compensation than guarantee.

Other benefits

Beyond the coverage guarantee, Sky WiFi Max gives you advanced control over your home network via the My Sky app. There are robust parental controls that allow you to group household tech into individual profiles so you can actually pause the internet on specific devices or create automated schedules for bedtimes and homework.

It also features Device Priority, letting you route maximum bandwidth to a single console or laptop for lag-free gaming and work sessions.

Finally, it acts as an active security buffer, using real-time network monitoring to block malware and phishing sites. So there are a lot of side-benefits.

What we think

On the face of it, Sky is offering an incredibly strong hardware incentive compared to its rivals because they actively swap out your router for a WiFi 6 or WiFi 7 device. At just £4.00 per month, we reckon that represents superb value. Particularly if you live in a very large or perhaps an older property where deploying a premium third-party mesh system could easily cost hundreds of pounds.

Also, the list of extra security and parental control features is very impressive. However, just be aware of the limitations in terms of actual speed guarantees that we've detailed above. WiFi Max is great, but it doesn't (and can't) provide absolute cast-iron certainty.

Frequently asked questions

How did the April 2026 Sky price rise affect WiFi Max?

As expected, on 1 April 2026, Sky implemented a flat £3 per month increase for almost all broadband customers. While the WiFi Max add-on fee remains £4, your total monthly bill will increase by £3. However, if you wish to cancel you have 30 days from receiving notification of this to leave Sky, penalty-free.

Is Sky WiFi Max compatible with Sky Q boxes and Mini boxes?

Yes, but it completely alters how they talk to each other. Sky WiFi Max can still be used with Sky Q, but it disables the "Q mesh" feature where TV boxes act as WiFi hotspots.

Also, Sky Q Mini boxes cannot connect wirelessly to Sky Max Pods; they must connect directly to the main Sky Q Hub or via Ethernet. Many heavy Sky Q users prefer the older Sky Broadband Boost for technical stability.

What is the difference between Sky WiFi Max and the older Sky Broadband Boost?

WiFi Max is the direct technical successor to the older Sky Broadband Boost, unlocking access to advanced WiFi 6/7 technology and enabling you to make the most of Sky's newer, faster broadband services.

The primary difference is the extra certainty and speed – WiFi Max steps up the old 3Mbps guarantee to a much improved 10Mbps or 25Mbps, depending on your subscription.

Do I have to return the Sky Max Pods if I cancel the service?

Yes. Gone are the days of collecting old routers and similar bits of kit from long-expired broadband contracts. All networking nodes and smart routers are provided by Sky on a loan-basis.

If you drop the WiFi Max tier or leave Sky Broadband completely, the devices must be posted back to avoid steep non-return penalties. These can be to £58 per pod and over £100 per hub. Plus, you wouldn't really need them any more anyway.

Can I get WiFi Max for free with any Sky packages?

Yes, Sky WiFi Max is included at no extra cost if you subscribe to Full Fibre 2.5 Gigafast+ or Full Fibre 5 Gigafast+ plans. These plans also include the high-performance WiFi 7 Gigafast+ Hub. Although it's worth mentioning that not many households can access those services quite yet.

Does the WiFi Max guarantee cover garden offices or sheds?

No. The Enhanced Wall to Wall WiFi Guarantee specifically excludes gardens and any external buildings or structures, such as sheds or detached garden offices. It's limited to up to 12 rooms within the main domestic dwelling. Sky has no contractual obligations beyond that.
