What is Sky WiFi Max and is it worth the extra cost?

Sky WiFi Max Hub and Pods

Sky WiFi Max (previously known as Sky Broadband Boost), not to be overly confused with Virgin Media WiFi Max or BT Complete Wifi – more on that later – is Sky's peace-of-mind broadband add-on. In essence, you'll pay an additional monthly fee for a number of features which will be more or less beneficial to certain customers.

When it comes to paying extra each month you have to establish whether it's something you actually need – why would you pay for something you don't? And to do that you're going to want to know the fine details of what's on offer and indeed when and how those benefits come into play. And that's precisely why we've written this guide.

What is Sky WiFi Max?

Sky WiFi Max is a bolt-on service you can add to any Sky Broadband package that's either Standard Fibre or Full Fibre (speeds between 36Mbps to 900Mbps). At its most basic level it offers a guarantee that you'll get a minimum speed Wi-Fi in every room in your home.

Sky will send you a new router (the Sky Max Hub), run tests for you to find household Wi-Fi blind spots and if necessary send you up to three Sky WiFi Pods (mesh router extenders) to reach parts your router alone cannot. Furthermore, if it fails to deliver the promised speed to every room, you will get a month's worth of broadband for free. Sky says 'fast Wi-Fi or your money back', but as with most things in life, it's not quite that simple.

Note on 2026 Pricing: Starting 1 April 2026, Sky is implementing a flat £3 per month increase for almost all broadband customers. While the specific WiFi Max add-on remains approximately £4, your base monthly package cost will likely increase by £3.

Pros

  • Upgraded router (WiFi 6 or WiFi 7)
  • Wi-Fi guaranteed in every room
  • Free evening/weekend engineer visits
  • At £4 p/m, very good value

Cons

  • Wi-Fi guarantee has room/speed limits
  • Incompatible with Sky Q mesh system
  • Equipment must be returned if cancelled

Here's an at-a-glance look at everything offered by Sky WiFi Max:

  • New router with up to three Sky WiFi Pods: Upgrading customers receive the Sky Max Hub (WiFi 6). However, Full Fibre 2.5 and 5 Gigafast+ customers now receive the new WiFi 7 Gigafast+ Hub at no extra cost.
  • Sky's Enhanced Wall to Wall WiFi Guarantee: Guarantees a minimum speed of 10Mbps (Superfast) or 25Mbps (Full Fibre 150+) to every room.
  • Advanced Security: Activated via the My Sky app, providing real-time monitoring and protection against malware and phishing.
  • Engineer visits when they suit you: WiFi Max waives the fee Sky usually charges for evening or weekend appointments.
  • Free mobile data for Sky Mobile customers: 2GB of data is automatically credited to your Sky Piggybank for unplanned outages over 30 minutes.

How to get Sky WiFi Max

Sky WiFi Max will cost you £4 extra per month as an add-on, or is included free with Gigafast+ packages.

The Sky Q Compatibility "Catch"

If you use Sky Q Mini boxes, be aware that the Sky Max Hub uses a mesh technology that is incompatible with the older "Q mesh" system. When you install WiFi Max, your TV boxes can no longer act as WiFi hotspots, and Sky Q Mini boxes cannot connect wirelessly to Sky Max Pods. Heavy Sky Q users may find the older Sky Broadband Boost a more stable technical choice.

How Sky WiFi Max compares to Virgin Media and BT

Sky is currently the only provider of the three that will upgrade your router hardware as part of the deal.

The Sky Max WiFi guarantee (small print)

Whole home might not mean your whole home

Sky's WiFi Guarantee covers up to five bedrooms or 12 rooms total. Crucially, this guarantee does not cover gardens or external structures such as sheds or garden offices.

You're not guaranteed your full wifi speeds

WiFi Max guarantees a minimum of 10Mbps for Standard Fibre and 25Mbps for Full Fibre plans. If Sky fails to meet this after an engineer visit, you are entitled to a one-off credit equal to one month of your broadband and WiFi Max subscription.

What we think

At face value, Sky offers the most among similar products because they are the only provider offering a new router (the Sky Max Hub or WiFi 7 Hub). At just £4 per month, it remains excellent value, especially for larger homes where a third-party mesh system would cost hundreds.

Frequently asked questions

How will the April 2026 Sky price rise affect my WiFi Max subscription?

Starting 1 April 2026, Sky is implementing a flat £3 per month increase for almost all broadband customers. While the WiFi Max add-on fee remains approximately £4, your total monthly bill will increase by £3. You have 30 days from notification to cancel your broadband contract penalty-free.

Is Sky WiFi Max compatible with Sky Q boxes and Mini boxes?

Sky WiFi Max can be used with Sky Q, but it disables the "Q mesh" feature where TV boxes act as WiFi hotspots. Furthermore, Sky Q Mini boxes cannot connect wirelessly to Sky Max Pods; they must connect directly to the main Sky Q Hub or via Ethernet. Many heavy Sky Q users prefer the older Sky Broadband Boost for technical stability.

What is the difference between Sky WiFi Max and the older Sky Broadband Boost?

WiFi Max is the modern successor to Broadband Boost and is required for WiFi 6 (Max Hub) or WiFi 7 (Gigafast+ Hub) hardware. The primary difference is the speed guarantee: WiFi Max guarantees 10Mbps or 25Mbps depending on your plan, whereas the older Boost only guaranteed 3Mbps.

Do I have to return the Sky Max Pods if I cancel the service?

Yes. Any Sky Max Pods and routers provided are loaned to you. If you cancel Sky WiFi Max or leave Sky Broadband, this equipment must be returned to Sky to avoid non-return charges, which can reach up to £58 per pod and over £100 per hub.

Can I get WiFi Max for free with any Sky packages?

Yes, Sky WiFi Max is included at no extra cost if you subscribe to Full Fibre 2.5 Gigafast+ or Full Fibre 5 Gigafast+ plans. These plans also include the high-performance WiFi 7 Gigafast+ Hub.

Does the WiFi Max guarantee cover garden offices or sheds?

No. The Enhanced Wall to Wall WiFi Guarantee specifically excludes gardens and any external buildings or structures, such as sheds or detached garden offices. It is limited to up to 12 rooms within the main domestic dwelling.
