Your guide to BT broadband packages
BT remains the most popular provider of broadband in the UK, with over 22% of the market. It's not hard to see why – BT has always been a household name, and so often the brand people turn to when they're not sure who to pick. They're considered a safe bet.
They're rarely the cheapest provider on the market, they're no longer the exclusive speed champions, and their entry-level hardware isn't the most advanced out there. Some might argue their popularity is more about legacy than anything else. However, what that misses is just how robust, reliable and premium the complete experience is with BT.
They simply deliver one of the most comprehensive broadband services available. You get highly rated customer support, seamless Wi-Fi guarantees, premium TV through the slick EE TV platform, and an array of add-ons—including excellent digital home phone packages. Rather than a full performance review (although you can find that here), this guide breaks down exactly what BT offers step-by-step so you know better what you are buying.
Key features
- Variety of packages – BT offers everything from basic copper-hybrid lines up to ultrafast Full Fibre plans hitting speeds of 1.6Gbps (although not commonly available), easily catering to light browsers and smart-home power users alike.
- Stay Fast Guarantee – BT backs their service with an explicit speed promise. If your speed drops below your personalized minimum and they can't fix it within 30 days, they’ll credit your account with £20.
- Smart Hub routers – Depending on your plan, you'll receive an advanced Smart Hub. Premium tiers now include cutting-edge Wi-Fi 7 hardware designed to easily cut through domestic wireless congestion.
- Robust security features – BT includes comprehensive security measures, such as built-in antivirus protection, to safeguard your online activities.
- UK-based customer support – Every subscriber has free access to BT Cyber Threat Protect (powered by Norton), delivering real-time antivirus shields and dark web monitoring across your household devices.
- UK-based customer support – You get direct access to dedicated customer service teams based entirely in the UK and Ireland for quick and clear assistance.
- Digital Voice service – BT's broadband packages support Digital Voice, allowing for high-quality landline calls over the internet, with various call plan options.
- BT Wi-Fi hotspots – Signing up unlocks completely free, unlimited access to millions of secure BT Wi-Fi hotspots scattered across the UK, saving your mobile data when you're out and about.

Buying tips and advice
When you're weighing up BT Broadband, your first step should always be to assess your household's actual needs. Paying for a massive pipeline you won't use is just a waste of money.
Installation and setup
The vast majority of BT packages are now self-install. If your home already has an active line, BT will simply courier you a box which you plug in, and you're good to go. However, if you're upgrading to Full Fibre (FTTP) for the first time, an engineer will need to visit to install a small box on your wall. BT will clarify exactly what your home needs during the checkout process.

Contract length and price changes
BT deals are a long-term commitment, usually with 24-month contract terms. Breaking these contracts early triggers heavy termination fees calculated by the months left on your bill, so make sure you are happy to stay put. Unless of course you're planning on switching to a provider who'll cover those fees for you – something we're seeing is increasingly common.
You also need to plan for annual price increases. Following Ofcom's transparency regulations, providers are banned from using confusing increase percentages. Instead, BT displays a predictable, flat-rate increase (typically an extra £4 a month) which automatically takes effect every spring.
Renewing or switching
If you're an existing BT customer approaching the final months of your 24-month term, never sit back and accept the standard out-of-contract price. Really, we'd recommend you consider switching, but if you really want to stay then you must negotiate. They have the power to slash your bill or upgrade your hardware if you mention cheaper competitor rates. If they refuse to budge, treat that as your green light to switch providers.
Bundling broadband with EE TV and phone
One of BT's biggest strengths is the ability to bundle your services. You can hook your broadband up to the flexible EE TV platform, which uses premium boxes to stream live channels over Wi-Fi. This lets you bolt on Sky content via NOW memberships or grab exclusive Premier League and Champions League coverage through TNT Sports. While bundling can save you money, always compare the standalone price of options like Sky Stream first to make sure you are actually getting a decent deal.
Upfront costs
While BT almost always has offers that waive setup and activation fees, you should always double-check the initial summary. Sometimes there is a small charge for router delivery or line activation. They may also request a tiny upfront payment to verify your direct debit details, though this is promptly refunded as a credit on your very first monthly bill, and something we more commonly see with Sky.
BT broadband routers
A fast fiber line is completely useless if your home router can't handle the traffic. BT currently deploys two primary hubs depending on the speed tier you buy...
BT Smart Hub 2: Included with standard and entry-level fiber plans, this reliable workhorse features seven internal antennas for wide coverage, automatic dual-band switching, and four Gigabit Ethernet ports for stable wired connections.
BT Smart Hub 7 Pro: Bundled with premium ultrafast plans (500Mbps, 900Mbps, and the rarely offered 1.6Gbps), this cutting-edge router utilizes next-generation Wi-Fi 7 technology to deliver maximum range, ultra-low gaming latency, and unparalleled speeds over wireless.
Note: If you prefer to deploy your own high-end third-party router, you absolutely can. BT allows third-party hardware on their network, and step-by-step configuration guides can be found across their community support pages.
Rewards, vouchers and gift cards
To sweeten their long 24-month terms, BT loves luring new switchers with high-value BT Virtual Reward Cards. These are (as the name suggests) virtual or physical prepaid Mastercards loaded with credit that you can spend virtually anywhere where Mastercard is accepted.
Crucially, these cards are never sent out automatically. To claim yours, wait for your line to be activated, log into your 'My BT' online portal, and manually hit the claim button. You have a strict 90-day window from the day you placed your initial order to trigger this claim; if you forget, the offer forfeits permanently. Once claimed, your digital card typically drops into your inbox within 14 days.
We can't emphasise enough how important it is that you manage your claim properly. One reason why so many providers offer gifts like this is that they know a certain percentage of people won't go through with the claim. Don't let that be you!

BT Broadband speeds and pricing
There are nine different BT Broadband packages to choose from, each with a different average download speed.
As with any type of service, you can find out if BT Broadband – either ADSL, Standard Fibre or Full Fibre – is available where you live by using our quick postcode checker.
BT Broadband packages
Since we're diving deep into the world of BT Broadband, let’s map out the various standalone package levels available. Keep in mind that there are dozens of custom permutations out there when you start mixing in TV bundles, calling plans, and whole-home Wi-Fi guarantees. For now, let's look strictly at what each tier delivers in terms of download speeds and exactly what kind of household they are built to suit.
BT Broadband
BT’s entry-level plan is a basic ADSL connection averaging just 10Mbps. This legacy copper line will struggle if multiple people hop online simultaneously. We mention it just for completeness, but you'd be very unfortunate to live somewhere where this is your only option.
If you have multiple people using the internet at once or plan on streaming in HD, this package will struggle. If you can't get something quicker over a fixed line you may wish to consider faster 4G or 5G broadband options instead.
BT Fibre Essential
Moving up to standard fibre, BT Fibre Essential delivers average speeds of 36Mbps. It comfortably handles web browsing, online shopping, and light streaming for one or two people on a budget.
BT Fibre 1
BT Fibre 1 bumps speeds up to an average of 50Mbps. This tier provides enough headroom for small households to take video calls, browse smoothly, and stream content in crisp HD or casual 4K.
BT Fibre 2
Averaging 67Mbps makes BT Fibre 2 – or Full Fibre 2 depending on your local network – the most popular package for mid-sized homes. It easily supports online gaming, steady Zoom meetings, and family 4K streaming.
BT Full Fibre 150
For modern, device-heavy homes, BT Full Fibre 150 provides a pure, rock-solid fibre connection right to your door with average speeds of 145Mbps. It effortlessly tackles heavy downloading, remote work, and multi-screen Ultra HD streaming.
BT Full Fibre 300
BT Full Fibre 300 moves you into premium, ultra-reliable territory with an average speed of 300Mbps. This package is built specifically to absorb heavy, simultaneous demand from larger households without a hint of lag.
BT Full Fibre 500
BT Full Fibre 500 is a powerhouse averaging 500Mbps, built for households packed with smart TVs, security cameras, and consoles. It transfers heavy files in seconds and delivers ultra-low latency for competitive gaming.
BT Full Fibre 900
BT Full Fibre 900 is the fastest generally available package, boasting an average speed of 900Mbps. This is designed for households that demand top-tier performance, whether that’s competitive gaming, 4K streaming, or running a home office with large data transfers.

Broadband bundles
BT TV is no more but that's only because it was rebranded EE TV and continued offering a near-identical service to that which BT TV offered before it. There are a few differences, which are rather irrelevant in this context, so instead we're going to quickly run through what the options are when bundling additional services with your BT Broadband.
- BT broadband only – If you're seeking just an internet connection without additional services, BT provides standalone broadband packages. This is ideal for those who primarily need internet access without the additional fluff.
- BT broadband and phone – For those who still use a landline, BT allows you to add a home phone service to your broadband package. You can choose from various call plans, including pay-as-you-go, 700 minutes per month, or unlimited anytime calls to UK numbers.
- BT broadband and EE TV – BT offers bundles that combine broadband with EE TV services. You can enjoy a range of channels, including Freeview and the option to add NOW TV passes (Entertainment, Sky Cinema, Sky Sports etc.) and TNT Sports.
- BT broadband, TV, and phone – If you're looking for an all-in-one solution, BT provides packages that bundle broadband, EE TV, and phone services. This option streamlines your services under one bill and can offer savings compared to purchasing each service separately.
Please note that to access EE TV, you need to subscribe to BT or EE Broadband. Like almost all provider's TV services, you can't purchase access to it on its own.
