If you dig into the terms of almost any major UK internet provider, you’ll find they all share one frustrating trait – it usually takes around two weeks to get traditional fixed-line equipment delivered and the connection fully activated. But when you need your broadband immediately – for example, if you’ve just moved home, your connection has failed or you just want to quickly switch provider – a couple of weeks can feel like a lifetime.
But is it actually possible to get a new broadband connection up and running by tomorrow? Or even today? Surprisingly, yes. It actually is. And here's how you do it...
Firstly, understand that your options are limited, but there are two scenarios where you can get online within 24 hours:

If you just need faster speeds, upgrading is often seamless. You can usually log into your online account or call your provider to switch plans instantly.
Just one point to note – if you're jumping to a significantly faster tier (perhaps moving from standard fibre to full fibre), you might need a higher-spec router. If the provider has to post you new hardware, your next-day upgrade will usually be dependent on ordinary postal times. And of course router availability – we have seen cases where providers have simply run short of equipment, resulting in longer than expected delays.
So, if you want a totally new connection by tomorrow, traditional fixed-line cables are out of the question. You'll have to look at mobile home broadband. However, if that sounds like a compromise, don’t worry – mobile technology has come a very long way. Delivered via the UK’s major mobile networks, 4G and 5G home broadband can perform just like standard Wi-Fi. Depending on your location, of course. You'll get a sleek plug-and-play (and often tiny) home router that broadcasts a powerful signal to all your devices.
Basically, if you need a new connection urgently and you're located somewhere with a reliable 4G/5G signal, it's proven to be a real gamechanger. While you'd need a fixed-line connection to achieve the fastest speeds and be able to cater to the highest number of people sharing the connection, for most people the only difference is that the service is delivered via the airwaves rather than a physical cable into your home. In fact, we've successfully used it ourselves to work remotely after a house move. The peformance was pretty much flawless.

Right now, the next-day broadband market belongs entirely to Three, Vodafone, O2 and EE – with the former having the lion's share due some extraordinarily aggressive pricing in recent years. To get your router delivered the very next day, you just need to beat the evening cut-off time. For example, both Three and EE offer free next-working-day delivery if you place your order before 8:00 PM. Miss that window, and you'll have to wait an extra 24 hours.
Also, it's worth pointing out that there actually two varieties of 4G/5G mobile broadband. There's 'true' mobile broadband, which provides a small mains and battery powered router which can be be carried with you. This'll provide a local WiFi network you can connect several devices to. But there's also mobile home broadband, which works via a more substantial mains-only router which should also provide a more powerful WiFi signal. Not quite so portable, but you can still plug it anywhere and get a new WiFi network in a jiffy.
The table below shows which of those providers can offer what, and most importantly how long you can expect to have to wait.

If next-day still isn't fast enough, you can actually get online today. Several providers offer a "Click & Collect" service. You can order a mobile broadband router or a MiFi puck online and pick it up from a high street store a few hours later. Alternatively, you can simply walk into an EE, Three, O2, or Vodafone store, buy a mobile broadband device over the counter, take it home, and plug it in. You’ll be online within minutes.
Unfortunately this simply never applies to fixed-line broadband. Regardless of any pre-existing connections – which can be frustrating if you've just moved into a new home. It usually requires an engineer visit or at the very least postal delivery of your new equipment. If you need an urgent connection, same-day collection of mobile broadband is the only way.
All that being said, there are a few things you should note about mobile broadband in terms of both its pros and cons versus a traditional fixed-line deal.
In order to best take advantage of next-day broadband installation you're going to want to get your order in as early in the day as possible. While there is that 8pm cut-off time, we'd advise playing it a little safer and ordering earlier in the day. Especially if the weekend is coming up as delivery may be on working days only.
If you really need a brand-new internet connection and you can't wait several weeks, then some form of mobile broadband is your only option. But it’s a genuinely great one and could change the way you think of broadband entirely. As long as you check your local area's coverage map to ensure you have a strong 5G or 4G signal, a plug-and-play mobile router could have you safely online by tomorrow.
