Broadband and phone deals – what to look out for

Broadband and phone bundles are becoming far less common these days as more and more people rely on their mobiles for calls. Nevertheless, some do still prefer a landline. For those that do, packages that have a landline bundles in do offer better value.

If you’re considering a deal that includes a landline, it’s worth checking exactly what’s included and how it fits your usage. Most providers now deliver calls over a digital line rather than the old copper network (which is due to be culled sometime in 2027), and some include calling periods or discounted rates at certain times, or indeed 'anytime'. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Check call packages carefully – Many deals include ‘weekend’ or ‘evening and weekend’ calls, but not unlimited anytime calls. If you use your landline a lot, an upgrade to an anytime package might be better value
  • Inclusive calls vs pay-as-you-go – Some deals include free calls during specific times, while others charge per call. Make sure you know which type you’re signing up for
  • Digital voice services – Most broadband and phone deals now use digital (VoIP) phone lines instead of the old analogue system. You’ll still plug in a phone, but it connects to your broadband router instead of directly to the wall
  • Price difference – Broadband-only deals are often cheaper. If you don’t need a home phone, you could save a few pounds a month by choosing a broadband only option instead
  • Call add-ons – Look out for optional extras such as international calling packages or mobile call bundles if you regularly ring abroad or call mobiles from your landline
  • Future-proofing – Traditional landlines are being phased out as part of the UK’s switch to all-digital phone lines by 2027, so any phone deal you take now should already be compatible with digital voice technology

Types of calling packages

If you choose a broadband deal that includes a home phone, you’ll usually need to pick a calling package too. These range from basic pay-as-you-go options to unlimited anytime calls. Understanding how each one works can help you avoid unexpected call charges and make sure you’re paying only for what you need.

  • Pay-as-you-go calls – The most basic option, where you’re charged for each call you make. It'll save you money if you rarely use your landline or only take incoming calls, but costs can add up if you're not disciplined about it
  • Evening and weekend calls – Includes free or discounted calls made during off-peak hours, usually from early evening until morning on weekdays, and all day at weekends. Calls made outside those times are charged at standard rates
  • Weekend calls – Covers calls made on Saturdays and Sundays only. It’s a budget-friendly way to keep a landline for occasional use if you do your nattering at weekends
  • Anytime calls – Lets you make unlimited calls to UK landlines and, in some cases, UK mobiles at any time of day. It’s best suited to households that still use their home phone regularly, and at all times of the day and week
  • International and mobile calling packages – Some providers offer optional add-ons that include discounted or unlimited calls to mobiles or overseas destinations. Definitely worth considering if you have family abroad

Most calling packages now run over digital phone lines, so you’ll still be able to use a normal handset but it connects through your broadband router. If you’re switching or upgrading, make sure your chosen calling package matches how and when you use your home phone.
