Cheap broadband isn't going to be fast. It isn't going to be fancy. It likely won't come with the sort of gift cards and free months you'll typically see from a premium package. It provides just enough for light use, with the main benefit being that it costs very little. And we can respect that.

Here then, are the cheapest broadband deals in the country right now, that are also widely available.

Finding the cheapest broadband deal – what to look for

If budget is your main concern, the cheapest broadband deals can offer fantastic value, especially if your household doesn't have demanding needs. A budget package is ideal for smaller households, individuals living alone, or those who primarily use the internet for basic tasks like checking email, light streaming and browsing social media.

However, choosing a cheaper deal means you'll be sacrificing speed – there's really no way around that. So while the savings are appealing, it’s crucial to be sure you can cope with slower speeds, particularly during peak times or if multiple people are online at the same time. Here’s what to keep in mind when hunting for the cheapest deal:

  • Check your actual needs – Be realistic about how you use the internet. If you live alone and only stream TV in standard definition, a cheaper, slower Fibre 35-type package might be perfect and save you money
  • Coping with slower speeds – If you opt for a package under 50Mbps, be prepared for occasional buffering when streaming 4K video or if you try to download large files. This trade-off is often acceptable for the money saved
  • Contract length – Many of the cheapest deals require a 24-month commitment. Ensure you're happy with the price and speed for the full duration, as price hikes will usually occur after the initial term
  • Upfront costs – Look for deals with no upfront cost (like some in the deals above). These one-off charges can quickly eliminate the savings of a low monthly price.
  • Router – The included router with the cheapest packages may be quite basic – expect that. For a small flat, that's fine, but for a larger home, a cheaper deal might require you to invest in a better third-party router to ensure decent Wi-Fi coverage, and at that point you're not really saving any money

Ultimately, the cheapest deal to you personally is going to be the one that meets your minimum speed requirements without wasting money on speed you'll never use.

Cheap versus value – there is a difference

The concept of a 'cheap' broadband deal is often relative, in that you should differentiate between a low-cost deal and one that provides excellent value for money. A low-cost deal simply has a small monthly price tag, often leading to slower speeds. However, the best value deal is the one that gives you the most speed and reliability for the money you pay. A Ferrari isn't 'cheap', but one with a lot of mileage, that's depreciated wildly, is going to be terrific 'value'.

By the same token, a high-end gigabit (1000Mbps) or better package might seem expensive, but if it only costs £8 more per month than a 100Mbps package, the gigabit deal is far better value in terms of the immense increase in speed and performance you receive for such a small amount of money. When comparing deals, look beyond the absolute monthly cost and consider the cost-per-megabit to truly find the package that offers the most value for your specific needs.
