If speed is your top priority, the fastest broadband packages can make a real difference to how smoothly everything runs at home. Big households with lots of devices, or you simply don’t want to wait around for large downloads – there are a host of good reasons to go fast.
Speeds do vary a lot between providers, and especially between network though, so it’s worth knowing what separates the genuinely fast deals from those that only look quick on paper. Here’s what to focus on:
- Full Fibre availability – If you can get Full Fibre, choose it. It’s the only type of broadband that delivers the fastest, most consistent speeds
- Top-end download speeds – Packages of 500Mbps, 900Mbps and 1Gbps are now common, and some providers even offer 1.6Gbps or 2Gbps, as you can see from our picks – just remember that the faster the package, the less available it tends to be, and you have to luck out a bit on the postcode lottery to go faster than 1Gbps
- Upload speeds – Faster uploads are essential if you share large files, back up photos or work from home. Top-end Full Fibre deals offers far higher uploads than Standard Fibre
- Router quality – A high-speed connection needs a router that can actually deliver those speeds over Wi-Fi. Look for Wi-Fi 6, or mesh options if you have a larger home
- No slow copper lines – Avoid Standard Fibre if you want the fastest speeds. It still relies to some extent on old copper cabling, which limits performance drastically
- Extras and savings – The fastest deals sometimes come with bill credit, reward cards of 'X' months free. Look for these (as in the deals above) for additional value
If outright speed is the goal, start by checking whether Full Fibre is available at your address. From there, choose a package with a Wi-Fi 6 (or 7) router. You’ll feel the difference straight away.
Do you really need the fastest speed you can get?
In truth, most households don’t need the absolute fastest speed available to them. Everyday tasks like streaming, browsing and video calling work perfectly well on mid-range Full Fibre packages. Even large, busy households can often get by happily on speeds well below the top-tier gigabit or multi-gigabit options, especially if your Wi-Fi setup is decent.
That said, there are still good reasons to go for the fastest package you can get. Higher speeds give you more breathing room when several people are online at once, make large downloads instant, and offer some future proofing as apps, games and devices get more demanding.
